The satellites are still in use, with current owner, Iridium Satellite , claiming to have around 250000 subscribers.

Iridium’s satellite phone service was launched in November of 1998, but was never able to achieve much traction among users due, mainly due to a flawed market positioning and calling rates that were as high as $10 per minute.
